Hidden Treasures

by kimgriggs on February 22, 2010

Last month a friend and I visited the ReBuilding Center in Portland.  It’s located at 3625 N. Mississippi Ave, Portland.
I had never been there but I had heard about it and was very curious.   It is an enormous warehouse full of used building and remodeling materials.  Their mission is to provide reasonably priced remodel/repair materials.   They have rooms and rooms full of various things…tubs, sinks, toilets, doors, trim, windows, lighting, tile, cabinets, fireplace items, and the list goes on.  Dress warm because it’s an open-air building (there’s a roof to shelter from the rain) because you will want to spend some time browsing.

I had a great time checking out the inventory and was super excited to see how someone’s unused and discarded items can be reused.   Take a look at their website http://www.rebuildingcenter.org/ for a list of items they accept for donation, volunteer opportunities, a list of classes that they offer, and hours of operation.

Recycled garden furniture.

If you’re looking for something fun to do this weekend, you should check out the Yard, Garden and Patio Show going on this weekend at the Oregon Convention Center. There will be lots of landscape experts, plants for sale, outdoor furniture displays, deck and fence specialists, seminars and something I’m excited about, the Cracked Pots area. Cracked Pots is a group of artists who want to share a message of sustainability and creativity by creating garden art from recycled materials. Their goal is the get everyone to reuse and recycle what would normally be thrown into our landfills.

So, whether you need a spruce up of your yard to get it ready to sell or just to brighten your mood on these rainy Oregon days…go to the show! Visit ygpshow.com for more show details.
